The Best And Worst Of The 2010 CMA Awards Performances

Last night the stars came out in Nashville for what is billed as Country's Biggest Night at the 44th Annual CMA Awards. Overall, they put on an entertaining show with some great performances, but there were also some that missed the mark a bit.

Carrie Underwood opened up the show on a high note, belting out her hit "Songs Like This" with Brad Paisley on guitar and Keith Urban on banjo. The song set a nice pace for the evening and flowed well into Carrie and Brad doing their opening dialog talking about, and joking about, the happenings of 2010. The pair has some great chemistry and really do a good job with their hosting duties.

My two favorite performances of the night came from Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift. Miranda did her best to channel the spirit of the Ramones during her performance of "That's The Way The World Goes Round," but yet still came through with that strong country twang and charm that she has. The song just absolutely rocks in a good way.

44th Annual CMA Awards Winners

Watching the awards show is always exciting and this years show was no exception. For the third straight year Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood hosted the program and their quick witted banter was actually entertaining to say the least.

It's always fun to see who performs, who presents and how bent out of shape the fans get about it all. We all want our favorite artists to perform and when they aren't chosen things can get pretty heated out there on twitter and facebook and the like. I get a good chuckle out of that. Anyway, this years performers were all pretty darn good and nothing too unexpected took place.

At the end of the night these were the winners:

Musician of the Year – Mac McAnally

Music Video of the Year – “The House That Built Me” Miranda Lambert, Director: Trey Fanjoy

Vocal Event of the Year – “Hillbilly Bone” Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins

Single of the Year – “Need You Now” Lady Antebellum, Producers: Paul Worley and Lady Antebellum

Song of the Year – “The House That Built Me” Songwriters: Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin

New Artist of the Year – Zac Brown Band

Dierks Bently Predicts Miranda Lambert Will Win Album Of The Year

Nice article on the examiner.com website where Dierks Bently talks about making his latest album "Up on the Ridge," a heavily bluegrass influenced record. He recalled going to Nashville's famed Station Inn every week and catching the great bluegrass performers there. When he decided to make this record he felt like it was far enough out of the mainstream that it allowed him more freedom.

"I went into it with no expectations, that's what freed me up to make the kind of record we wanted to make. So, the back side of that to have country radio play the song, see the video on CMT and GAC, and then to be recognized by the CMA for making a record that leans on the bluegrass side of things, there's not a lot of words for it.

While he is blown away by the reaction to the record, he still doesn't seem to have much faith that it can take the top Album honor on the CMAs.

The CMA's Entertainer of the Year Choices Spurs Debate

The 44th CMA Awards are happening this week and it just reminds me of just why I think that country music award shows are actually bad for the industry. The CMA's are nothing more than a study in politics and what artists can generate more votes from the Academy. The best act doesn't always win, or may not even be nominated, and the country fan base knows this and just doesn't understand why.

The questions of who get nominated or claims victory in the coveted CMA Entertainer of the Year category seem to run rampant even through the artists themselves. This year's nominees are Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and the Zac Brown Band. A lot of shiny new contenders in a category that is normally dominated by long running heavyweights. Even megastars like Reba McEntire seem a bit confused.

"I have heard they are looking for a new regime, wanting to turn things around and to kind of mix up the shuffle," said Reba McEntire, the 1986 CMA entertainer of the year. "Well, they definitely did. This has sure gotten everybody to talk about it."
