Ratings Show Good And Bad For The 44th Annual Country Music Awards

First the good: Country music showed that it can still draw a crowd when putting on the 44th Annual Country Music Awards. ABC had the highest ratings of the night, finishing with a 4.7 rating / 13 share among adults 18-49 and averaged 16.4 million viewers for the show.

The bad: The show, which was hosted by Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley, was still down viewers from years past and early returns estimate it might be the lowest rated telecast ever for the CMAs.

So I guess the glass is either half-empty or half-full depending on how you want to look at it. 16.4 million viewers is certainly nothing to sneeze at. It will be interesting to see how the other country awards shows compare.

The Best And Worst Of The 2010 CMA Awards Performances

Last night the stars came out in Nashville for what is billed as Country's Biggest Night at the 44th Annual CMA Awards. Overall, they put on an entertaining show with some great performances, but there were also some that missed the mark a bit.

Carrie Underwood opened up the show on a high note, belting out her hit "Songs Like This" with Brad Paisley on guitar and Keith Urban on banjo. The song set a nice pace for the evening and flowed well into Carrie and Brad doing their opening dialog talking about, and joking about, the happenings of 2010. The pair has some great chemistry and really do a good job with their hosting duties.

My two favorite performances of the night came from Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift. Miranda did her best to channel the spirit of the Ramones during her performance of "That's The Way The World Goes Round," but yet still came through with that strong country twang and charm that she has. The song just absolutely rocks in a good way.

44th Annual CMA Awards Winners

Watching the awards show is always exciting and this years show was no exception. For the third straight year Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood hosted the program and their quick witted banter was actually entertaining to say the least.

It's always fun to see who performs, who presents and how bent out of shape the fans get about it all. We all want our favorite artists to perform and when they aren't chosen things can get pretty heated out there on twitter and facebook and the like. I get a good chuckle out of that. Anyway, this years performers were all pretty darn good and nothing too unexpected took place.

At the end of the night these were the winners:

Musician of the Year – Mac McAnally

Music Video of the Year – “The House That Built Me” Miranda Lambert, Director: Trey Fanjoy

Vocal Event of the Year – “Hillbilly Bone” Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins

Single of the Year – “Need You Now” Lady Antebellum, Producers: Paul Worley and Lady Antebellum

Song of the Year – “The House That Built Me” Songwriters: Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin

New Artist of the Year – Zac Brown Band

Back in September Olay announced that Carrie Underwood would be the first ever North American Celebrity Ambassador for their skin care line as part of the “Challenge What’s Possible” campaign, debuting this year. The image accompanying this post appears to be a look at Carrie as part of a campaign debut print ad.

ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition Nashville Episode To Air November 14th

Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and LeAnn Rimes will have appearances in an upcoming episode of the popular ABC series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Originally slated to air November 7th, it has now been reportedly moved back a week to November 14th, according to ABC. The show is known for its charitable efforts in helping organizations and individuals in need who have experienced disaster, tragedy, hardship etc. as well as honoring people who have stepped up to aid in various ways throughout their communities. In this episode Ty Pennington and his team of experts and community volunteers spend a week rebuilding the Lighthouse Christian School which is located near Nashville. Back in May, when Nashville was hit hard by two days of flooding, this was one of many properties and establishments to be affected by extensive damage. The show usually airs in the 7pm (CST) time slot. Based on previous episodes of the show and past footage of the flooding, if you tune in, I’d say it might be a good idea to have some kleenex nearby.

Carrie Underwood Hits The Big Screen In April

I guess you can add movie star to the list of titles Carrie Underwood holds! She will make her big screen debut next spring in a new film called "Soul Surfer." The film is based on the real life story of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a shark attack in 2003 but still returned to competition within months.

Underwood stars along side Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid in the film, along with Anna Sophia Robb who plays Hamilton. Underwood's initial feelings after seeing a preview screening were that the movie has a chance to be a big hit.

"I was blown away by the film, and I think people are going to be really excited when they see it," Underwood said.

The movie is set to hit theaters on April 15th, 2011. In the meantime you can catch Carrie as she co-hosts the 44th Annual CMA Awards in Nashville next week!
